Communication manager
Location: St. Paul, Minnesota - Hybrid
Reports to: Executive Director
Type: Full-time
Compensation: $60,000 salary, generous benefits & paid time off.
Start Date: Flexible, ideally mid-to-late spring 2026
Position Summary
The Communications Manager will lead Groundwork Institute's external and internal communications. This role is responsible for developing and executing a communications strategy that advances our civic engagement and leadership development mission, builds public awareness of our programs, and supports organizational campaigns and fundraising. The ideal candidate is a skilled storyteller with deep roots in social justice movements, a sharp political instinct, and experience translating organizing work into compelling public narrative.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Communications
Develop and implement a cohesive communications strategy across digital, print, and media channels
Align messaging across Groundwork Institute
Compliance with nonprofit communications guidelines
Build and maintain Groundwork's brand voice, visual identity, and narrative framework
Content Creation & Digital Communications
Write and edit content for email, website, press releases, and campaign materials
Manage editorial calendar and ensure timely, consistent content across all platforms
Create and adapt materials for a range of audiences, including donors, partners, community members, and media
Campaign & Program Support
Support communications needs for the Election Protection Network, Training program, and other organizational initiatives
Develop rapid response communications during election cycles and high-stakes political moments
Collaborate with program staff to amplify field work and participant stories
Media Relations & External Partnerships
Cultivate relationships with state & national media & creators
Draft and distribute press releases, op-eds, and media advisories
Represent Groundwork in coalitions and communications tables as needed
Desired Qualifications
A deep commitment to justice, equity, and movement-building work in Minnesota
At least 3–4 years of experience in communications, journalism, digital organizing, or a related field
Excellent writing and editing skills across formats from social posts to long-form narrative
Experience developing a communications strategy for a nonprofit, campaign, or advocacy organization
Strong visual communication instincts; experience with Canva, Adobe Suite, or similar tools & comfort with email platforms e.g., EveryAction
Ability to manage multiple projects in a fast-paced, startup environment and meet tight deadlines
Existing relationships with Minnesota media, communications professionals, or advocacy coalitions a plus
